Melissa McCarthy’s ‘SNL’ Skit Shines a Light on the Truth

There’s a reason why they say the truth comes out in jest. Melissa McCarthy did a great job on Saturday Night Live portraying the truth. While the Gilmore Girls star was hilarious on Saturday night, she hit hard at the truth of what is going on in the briefing room and this administration.

It’s no secret the press and the Sean Spicer have gotten off to a rocky start. Melissa even used the word rocky in her skit. Her skit pretty much had it all. There were multiple outbursts against the press, even though Spicer hasn’t been this outraged against the press, there’s definitely been outrage. The language he’s used has really spun himself into knots. Melissa said: “When you use the words and he uses them back, it’s a circular using of the word.” That pretty much sums up how he’s been trying to play the media. The skit even had CNN locked in a cage. Is it sad that this was a dramatized version of what’s actually happening in the briefing room but not actually too far off from the truth?

I have watched SNL on and off throughout the years. Usually when one of my favorite actors or musicians hosted or I heard about a hilarious skit but never before this past election have I seen the show get this political. Sure, since the show began every president has been subject to ridicule but it didn’t seem to be this frequent. Sadly, Donald Trump is a comic’s dream. There’s so much raw material to draw from. It’s more than that, though. Politics is showing up everywhere in our daily lives. Before it was just there in the news and maybe when a politically minded celebrity won an award he/she might use that in their speech. We’ve all been pretty much immune to the political atmosphere. This election, or should I say the results of the election, has brought politics to our everyday lives.

Shows like Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver are political satires. They’re funny but they also bring something insightful to the laughter. Melissa didn’t necessarily bring anything insightful to her sketch. She just shined a light on what is already there. It’s a lot of fun to laugh at The Boss star as she’s giving us some of her best stuff but in reality, this is the world we are living in now. It’s no laughing matter. Maybe the point is, if you haven’t noticed already, it’s time to be paying attention. It’s funny when Melissa is playing a character, it’s not funny when she’s playing that character perfectly and the character is the press secretary of the White House.
