We are a Country Built on Immigrants

This country was built on immigrants. Unless you’re a native American, your family came from somewhere else. My parents came from England.

We can’t shut these people out. They have a right to come to this country, just like our families did. We are a country made up of so many different people with different backgrounds and we should continue to welcome them. I’m saddened that the fear of possible attacks is supposed to make this ban okay. We haven’t had a major terrorist attack on our soil since 9/11. I don’t understand why Sean Spicer and Donald Trump keep saying this is for our safety and we need a stronger vetting process. John Oliver did a segment on his show explaining just how extensive this vetting process is. Only one percent of the refugees even get picked to go through the refugee vetting processing.

Take a look at a clip from Last Week Tonight explaining what the process is:

We have a very rigorous screening process already put into place. It takes 18 to 24 months to get through the process. We have historically been a country who have welcomed immigrants, so why are we shutting them out? If we don’t want to let immigrants into our country, we are all being hypocrites because the majority of the people in America came from somewhere else.

I like watching John because he puts everything into perspective. In this clip, he says, there’s only one time refugees were proven to be a threat and on Thanksgiving, we’ll be celebrating it. Let that sink in for a minute.

I’m so proud of all the people that are rallying together to fight these injustices. This country is really uniting in face of this darkness. There was a rally in Battery Park on Sunday afternoon to condemn Trump’s Muslim ban.

On Saturday, there was a protest outside JFK airport. The nation is rallying together to stand up for what is right.

U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly is one of the judges who halted Trump’s deportation of refugees. The fight is long from over but at least she saved some people from being sent back.

According to The New York Times, the court orders came “from judges in at least four cities” and is only the first step. It could take years. The orders also only included people that were on their way here or already here.

If this is an executive order you disagree with, you can take to the streets just like so many are doing but remember you can always call your congress person too. For too long we have been silent, now is the time to get involved.
